Why the Confectionery Packaging You Choose Matters

Learn how you can maintain packaging functionality and attractiveness and also protect the environment, and all while not compromising on any of the packaging properties

We know that kids eat with their eyes, and the truth is – so do adults… and in the case of candy packaging bags and confectionery boxes, this is all the more true. Learn how you can maintain packaging functionality and attractiveness and also protect the environment, and all while not compromising on any of the packaging properties!

In the food industry in general, and in confectionery in particular, external appearance and packaging design are an integral part of the consumption experience. Eye-catching colors, a rustling opening sound and irregular geometries are combined with packaging functionality to protect the product over time. Unfortunately, however, candy packaging manufacturers focus mainly on external appearance and functionality, often using manufacturing methods and raw materials not always considered to be environmentally friendly.

The sustainability trend is here to stay

This state of affairs has changed in recent years. Accumulating plastic waste is conspicuous. It is found everywhere on the globe, from the high mountain peaks to the oceans. This is especially true when it comes to small products such as confectionary which can be carried around in your pocket wherever you go, and thus leave their waste, even if unintentionally, in the open.

The difficult pictures of waste pollution and harm to the environment and to animals are creating growing awareness among end consumers, and consequently also among large brands and packaging manufacturers. These in turn are adopting more sustainable packaging solutions in the aim of bringing about change in confectionery packaging.

Polysack provides confectionery solutions to suppliers, both Twist film for individual candy and chocolates and film for packaging candy in bulk, bags or stand up pouches. The uniqueness of the films we offer is that they are entirely PE-based, which means that they can be integrated into any PE mechanical recycling process in most countries in the world. These films demonstrate all the desired properties which confectionery packaging suppliers are looking for, including mechanical strength and dead fold.

Seamlessly replaces standard PET, PVC and cellophane films

What makes our Polyphane Twist films, which are PE-based, the best environmental solution compared to traditional plastic film used for confectionery packaging?

To answer this question we will briefly review the most common raw materials used for Twist wrap packaging:

  • PVC – a commonly used polymer in the past. Its main disadvantage is its environmental impact. This is evident in the manufacturing stage, mainly due to the decomposition of the polymer which releases environmentally damaging chloride ions. For this reason many manufacturers no longer use PVC and are switching to alternative raw materials.
  • Cellophane – a polymer derived from renewable sources, making it a sustainable packaging material that supports the circular economy. Furthermore, it is entirely biodegradable. However, it is an especially expensive raw material, and therefore in the confectionery sector is mainly used for premium products.
  • PET and PP – these polymers are used extensively in the packaging industry. Similar to the PE we offer, they are theoretically suitable for recycling. Nonetheless, it is important to note that flexible film from PE is commonly used in many sectors, and therefore has a dedicated recycling stream, while there is hardly any flexible PP or PET film, and therefore in actual fact is not recycled. Moreover, one kg of Polyphane Twist film produces 33% more wraps compared to one kg of Polyphane Twist film, and 36% more wraps in relation to one kg of PET film.

Excellent dead fold and high barrier for water vapor

One of the most important properties of film used for Twist packaging is dead fold, which helps the folded wrap maintain its spatial form over time. Our PE film is characterized by higher elasticity compared to comparable PP or PET film. Thus, the wrapping tightly wraps the product, without any sagging, providing more hermetic product protection. Moreover, our film is based on HDPE which is known for its excellent vapor protection, making it especially suitable for confectionery.

High productivity on any printing press

Nice-looking and recyclable packaging is only half the story. For confectionery manufacturers to adopt the Polyphane Twist film for their packaging it must be able to integrate smoothly into the production floor, without requiring special modifications. Polysack’s Polyphane Twist films have been used regularly by our customers for many years. They are suitable for a wide variety of printing methods, including flexo-graphic, rotogravure and others, as well as for the new and old packaging machines on the market.

Sustainability, functionality and design all in one product

Polysack’s Polyphane Twist films are available in several versions: transparent, white or metalized, and in 25 and 30 micron thickness. The transition to PE film will enable you to protect and preserve the product, while protecting the environment and preserving limited global resources.
